On Sunday morning, December 13, 2020, a knowledge exchange workshop on the role of civil society in the field of good land management was held in Al Dhale’e Governorate, which was organized by the International Youth Council – Yemen (IYCY).

The workshop was attended by the first undersecretary of Al-Dhalea governorate, Mr. Nabil Al-Afif and the member of the local council’s administrative body, Mr. Ali Al-Oud and Khaled Al-Khawaj. The workshop was done by the participation of a number of community figures representing the government, private and civil society organizations, as well as activists and people who are interested in the field of land governance.

The workshop, which was hosted in the local authority building hall and directed by the trainer Qaid Salih Naji, aimed at exchanging knowledge and concepts related to the issue of good land management (land governance) in addition to the challenges facing civil society in this aspect.

The participants dealt with a number of important points and discussions about the reasons that lead to disputes on land, as well as the basics of ownership and knowledge of societies rights, in addition to assessing land ownership rights and security of tenure, and land registration.

The participants also discussed the role of civil society in land management, and whether civil society organizations work in this field in Yemen, what are the problems they may encounter, and the areas that must be enhanced with the government to improve land management and activate it in a sustainable manner.

Participants in the workshop activities had also presented a set of solutions and suggestions that would contribute to overcoming the challenges facing society in terms of ownership and registration of land, and how women can obtain their rights to access and use land, and whether there is actually effective exploitation of land, and how to activate It the right way.

The workshop concluded with key recommendations aimed at creating a joint coordination mechanism between the government and civil society, which would contribute to developing solutions related to land problems, and how this could be inspired by the successful practical experiences of some other countries in the Arab region.
