First training on the impact of plastic pollution in Yemen

International Youth Council – Yemen IYCY implements its first awareness sessions on the occasion of Earth Day entitled (The Impact of Plastic Pollution in Yemen)
International Youth Council – Yemen (IYCY) implemented its first awareness sessions on the occasion of Earth Day hosting by Engineer Omer Badokhon to present an online awareness course entitled (The impact of plastic pollution in Yemen) on Wednesday, April 8, 2020. The session targeted 44 participants interested in the environment and the effects of plastic pollution from various Yemeni governorates. There was a very big interaction from the participants by asking questions and raising their ideas.

The course started with a general definition of the reason behind the establishment of the #EarthDay by the representative of IYCY, and then a general talk about the materials that go into the manufacture of plastic materials and their impact on the environment.

Engineer Omer indicated that plastic materials are used for many purposes and needs, which made the plastic industry escalate dramatically, in 2013 the use of plastic increased by 3% globally, indicating that it is a very large percentage. Plastic pollution in Yemen started in the eighties and spread greatly and annoying to this day, because of the frequent use of plastic bags that we use for many purposes, which only one bag needs from 400 to 450 years in order to degrade! Thus, plastics accumulate in the ground and cause severe damage to soil, humans and animals, He added.

Badokhon added that the General Authority for Environmental Protection is doing an excellent job in order to preserve the environment, but it has been affected by the current crisis in Yemeni society. He called on all Yemeni people to take responsibility and initiative to work out solutions that limit the environmental damage we face in Yemen through the use of social media platforms, knowing that there is an article in the Yemeni constitution that states that protecting the Yemeni environment is the responsibility of the state and the responsibility of every individual in society.

Engineer Omar praised the Yemeni students in the various governorates who are working to provide projects and solutions to reduce plastic pollution, but unfortunately those projects do not see the light or received those who market them, where they only need support, whether from the state or the Yemeni investors.

Eng. Omar Badokhon called for doing social mobility in order to increase awareness and inspire Yemeni society to preserve the environment. We at the International Youth Council – Yemen welcome this call and we will work hard to exert pressure and social mobility to reduce environmental pollution in Yemen.

IYCY representative praised that the session was very interactive, as participants were asking questions about problems related to plastic, as well as sharing information with all participants. Eng. Omar Badokhon pointed out that the initiative taken by the International Youth Council – Yemen IYCY came at a time we all suffer from it due to many problems, especially the problems of pollution and the environment.

International Youth Council -Yemen continues to implement many awareness sessions where two sessions will be held in the coming days on intensifying climate action and water pollution in Yemen.
