IYCY as partner with Clean Lighting Coalition
IYCY as partner with Clean Lighting Coalition to implement a Lighting Market Assessment.
International Youth Council Yemen (IYCY) with its partnership with Clean Lighting Coalition (CLiC) has implemented National Level Lighting Market Research for Minamata COP5.
The collection of CLiC’s market data shows the avability of Fluorescent lamp type and LED Retrofits Lamps available in Yemen Market.
The assessment identify the appropriate supply-chains and players within those supply chains who can be approached to gather price information on linear fluorescent lamps and pin-based compact fluorescent lamps.
These two lamp types are primarily professional lighting products, and therefore tend to be sold in batches / shipments through wholesalers or specialist lighting shops directly to end-users like supermarkets, office buildings, hospitals, municipalities, airports, etc.
IYCY has been selected by CLiC as a NGO from Yemen among other NGOs from the MENA region.
Mr. Tareq Hassa from IYCY has insists that this type of research and assessment is crucial to avoid mercury and its pollution as well as its effect to human and environment.
The Clean Lighting Coalition (CLiC) was launched in 2020 to provide evidence and data to governments to encourage them to eliminate mercury in lighting products through the Minamata Convention on Mercury.
CLiC focused on compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and linear fluorescent lamps (LFLs) and mercury-free alternatives to those lamps.
At the fourth Minamata Convention Conference of the Parties (COP4) in Bali in March 2022, Parties agreed to phase-out integrally ballasted CFLs (CFL.i) in 2025. Parties, however, did not reach consensus on LFLs, and therefore they will be discussed at COP5 in Oct/Nov 2023.
