IYCY granted consultative status for the United Nations ECOSOC
The United Nations Economic and Social Council, held in New York, Thursday, January 23, 2020, endorsed the recommendation of the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations to grant International Youth Council – Yemen (IYCY), the special consultative status with the Council, to be able to complete its efforts in achieving development and continuing humanitarian work in Yemen.
IYCY chairman Tareq Hassan said: “This consultative status will enable the Council to engage actively in the work of the Council for Social Economic of the United Nations and its subsidiary bodies, as well as in the work of the General Secretariat of the United Nations, along with programs, funds and agencies of the United Nations in multiple ways.”
Eng. Hassan added that this consultative status will enable IYCY to attend and monitor all procedures of the United Nations Human Rights Council, submit written and oral statements to the council, participate in expert discussions and informal meetings, and organize “parallel activities” on issues related to the work of the Human Rights Council and, other international meetings.
Engineer Tareq Hassan pointed out that “IYCY had participated in many international meetings concerned with sustainable development, and that granting the consultative status to IYCY comes to help to complete its mission in the development process and effective presence at the international level in order to enhance Yemen’s presence.
Stressing that the approval of the request to accept IYCY as a consultative body came after it had met all the international conditions and standards for NGOs, and after discussing its request carefully and professionally and the approval of all members of the committee.
It is worth noting that granting this consultative status to civil society Organizations comes on the recommendation of the United Nations Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations, as provided by Economic and Social Council Resolution No. 31/1996, whereby organizations demonstrate their work programs are directly related to the goals and purposes of United Nations.
- International Youth Council – Yemen, is a non-governmental and non-profit organization specifically targeting youth and society. Since 2012, IYCY has contributed to the development of youth and society through its programs and interventions, either with the support of international NGOs, or self-financing activities. The range of programs and activities focuses not only on youth and women, but also on society as a whole. Its projects include water, environmental sanitation, nutrition, agriculture, food security, health, energy, environment, climate change, as well as youth development.
