Press Release
Press release issued by Yemeni civil society organizations with special consultative status from the UN Economic and Social Council and participated in the cop28 climate conference.
Regarding the declaration of Yemen stricken by floods resulting from the effects of climate change.
Special
We, Yemeni non-governmental civil society organizations with special consultative status from the United Nations economic and Social Council and participated in the COP28 climate conference, declare that Yemen is a stricken country suffering from catastrophic effects due to floods caused by climate change.
Many areas and governorates in Yemen were recently exposed to heavy rains that caused floods and torrential floods, which led to the destruction of infrastructure in the areas and governorates of Hodeidah, Hajjah, Taiz and some governorates, displacing thousands of families, and exacerbating the difficult humanitarian conditions that Yemenis are living. These natural disasters highlight the great challenges that Yemen is facing in light of increasing climate change.
We call on the international community, humanitarian organizations, donor countries and the United Nations to urgently intervene and provide the necessary support to help Yemen cope with these natural disasters. Urgent needs include the provision of shelter, food, safe drinking water, as well as medical and Relief Services.
We also stress the need to adopt sustainable environmental policies and strengthen international efforts to combat climate change. We call for technical and financial support for development projects aimed at enhancing the ability of local communities in Yemen to adapt to climate change.
In this context, we call on all concerned parties to cooperate and work together to achieve the goals of the COP28 climate conference and ensure a more sustainable and secure future for Yemen and the whole world.
We, Yemeni civil society NGOs, are committed to continue working to raise awareness about climate change issues, strengthen efforts to protect the environment and achieve sustainable development.
