World Cities Day
World Cities Day is seen as an opportunity to enhance the international community’s interest in urban development worldwide and to sow the seeds of cooperation to push ahead with the challenges of urban development and contribute to sustainable urban development in all cities of the world. The idea was first put forward by the participants in the Shanghai Expo – People’s Republic of China – 2010 where the local government of the Shanghai Municipality prepared a proposal for the establishment of the International Day of Cities, which was approved by the General Assembly of the United Nations after three years on 27 December 2013 under the slogan city Better for a better life.
The largest cities in the world cannot be identified because they are many and some of them are variable. The largest cities in the world in general and the Arab world in particular vary according to different criteria, for example, New York City followed by Alexandria in terms of space; Dhaka (Bangladesh), Hyderabad (India) and the Egyptian capital Cairo in terms of population density.
Talking about such cities is what draws the attention of most governments of the world to emphasize the importance of planning and avoid the random crawl to avoid the difficulties these countries may face, which may have the potential to contain the largest and most beautiful cities in the world.
There is no doubt that many countries have historical cities that have added to their special character and economic income and have risen to one of the most important elements of any country (tourism) such as Yemen, which contains many historic cities; such as the city of Sam or Sam Ben Noah as it is known as the city of Azal and currently called the city of Sanaa. It was named to its founder Sam Ben Noah, where it is the oldest city on the face of the earth.
The city of Sam of the oldest human civilizations began to form the first landmarks of the main civilization at that time since the ninth millennium BC which was manifested through agriculture, building villages, cities and livestock. …etc. It is a historic city charms the visitor with its beauty and splendor of its architecture, but it faces many difficulties that made it lose part, although this part of the large architectural buildings, especially in old Sanaa and the most important reasons:
-The city has been significantly affected by modern architecture
-The neglect of the government of the buildings of old Sanaa, which led to a short period of time to the collapse of some of them.
-Not to mention the turbulent security situation in the country, which affected them negatively by aerial bombardment of most of these historic landmarks.
It is important to mention the indiscriminate expansion and poor planning of its surrounding areas, which led to the emergence of slums, social inequality and isolation among the strata of society at several levels. The 27th anniversary of the World Day of Cities is a minimum to remind the governments of most countries of the importance of planning and good management, which will certainly create positive changes in economic, social and environmental development.
